The dinner veers more toward the aggressive side than awkward five minutes in when Elijah slides the glass of whiskey across the island to Beck.

“So, how long have you been fucking my sister?”

“Jesus, Eli,” I say, earning me a shrug from him.

Beck just relaxes back on the stool, moving his hand to the back of my neck. “You got my last text message, right?”

Eli shakes his head. “I take it, you’re the reason she was miserable when she got back?”

“She is right here,” I remind him. “And how is any of this your business? I don’t interrogate your girlfriends.”

“No. You just make me break up with them when you don’t like them.”

I bite my lips together. Regina might not have been the only one I made a deal to get rid of, but I stand by every one of them.

“No one has answered my question yet.” Eli points between us. “Either one, I don’t care. I just want to know if he’s the reason you were upset.”

When I look away, I feel Beck’s hand flex like he wants me to look at him instead, but I don’t.

“That’s what I thought,” Eli says.

Beck’s hand moves down to my leg, tracing smooth circles on my skin.

“So, I’ll put this out there right away.” Elijah has his hands braced on the counter, the cool look of intimidation I’ve seen directed at so many etched on his face—like he couldn’t care less if you listen to him, so long as you’re doing as told. “The next time you hurt her, I’ll destroy you. Your life, your reputation, anything you love is fair game.”

“You have a habit of threatening me,” Beck bites back. “Maybe that’s how you’re used to working with whatever douche bags you usually hang around with, but not me. I have no plans on hurting her, but you can fucking bet it has shit to do with you.”

He punctuates with a smug smile that falls off his face just as fast as it appeared, and he downs his whiskey, shoving the glass back at Eli. The tension radiates between them, and maybe it’s because no one ever fights for me, but I revel in it for a second longer than I probably should before I sigh.

“If the pissing match is over, I’d love to eat now.”

Eli taps his finger on the counter while Beck’s thumb rubs my thigh. After a few tense seconds, Eli swipes the bottle off the counter beside him, refilling Beck’s tumbler.

“Saw Dad today,” he says, and my eyes lift to him. “He put Wilson in his place over him wanting to get back into oil. Then he told him to get an eco-friendly car by next week, or I’d kick him out of his swanky executive office.”

“You plan to hold Wilson to it?” I ask.

Elijah nods. “Wilson will be in the basement next Monday unless he rolls up in something electric.”

I smile, mostly because the head of Daddy’s acquisitions team drives an Aston Martin, which is terrible for
